By regulating standards, skills and core competencies for coaching, governance bodies, like the International Coaching Federation (ICF), ensure that coaches are experienced and reliable professionals who abide by a strict Code of Ethics.
There are different credentialing levels that coaches obtain as they progress in their studies and practice. The ICF credentialing standards are Associate Certified Coach (ACC), Professional Certified Coach (PCC), up until Master Certified Coach (MCC).
Always verify the Coach's credentials before you start working together.
The European Mentoring and Coaching Council provides The European Individual Accreditation (EIA), an internationally recognised accreditation, that demonstrates that an individual practising as a professional mentor/coach has the appropriate level of knowledge and the ability to apply it effectively in their practice.
